ARTHUR L. VAN NESS, age 88, died on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne.
ARTHUR was born on February 14, 1920, in Tipton, County, Indiana, the son of the late Frank T. and Mary Lauretha (Murray) Van Ness. He moved to Grant County in 1920. On November 9, 1945, he married Miriam Virginia Deal. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2006.
He graduated from Fairmount High School in 1936 and from Business Preparatory School in Wichita, Kansas in 1938. He was in the Army Air Force from November 1941 to September 1945, discharged as a Tech/Sergeant Administrative Specialist. He was overseas in England, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily and Italy with C 47 Troop Carrier Group. He retired from the Indiana Guard Reserve with the rank of Major in the Recruiting and Retention Division in 1993.
He worked as a Route Salesman and Branch Manager for Dwyer Vending Service from 1940 to 1941 then 1945 to 1972. He was a Sales Representative for Servomation Corp from 1972 to 1980, then retired as Credit Manager of Wright-Moore Corp of Ft. Wayne in 1986. He lived in Marion, Muncie and Ft. Wayne.
He was a lifetime member of the Samaritan Lodge #105 F&AM, Marion and a member of the Ft. Wayne Scottish Rite. He attended the Christ Church of Georgetown, Ft. Wayne and was a leader of the Grief Share Group at the Chapel, Ft. Wayne.
Survivors include Daughters, Rebecca Sue Smuck (Dale) of Ft. Wayne, Indiana & Teresa Kay Trager (Steve) of South Elgin, Illinois; Granddaughters, Heather Leigh Case (Michael) of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Melissa Marie Balfour (Brett) of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Angela Lynn Northcutt of Rockville, Maryland & Amanda Nicole Budill (Joe) of Chicago, Illinois, and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother Paul.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 3, 2008, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with the Reverend Brett Balfour and Reverend Chris Steele officiating.
Military Rites and Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Indiana.
Friends may call from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. Masonic Services will be held at 4:00 p.m.
