Carl's earlier hobbies included art drawings and paintings. He enjoyed playing golf at the Marion Elks with the senior league every afternoon during the season. He was in several bowling leagues in Marion, and also played a lot of Bridge in his lifetime, where he and his wife organized several duplicate bridge clubs.
