Charles W. "Chuck" Burkhart
July 6, 1926 — February 21, 2016
Charles W. "Chuck" Burkhart, age 89, peacefully entered the gates of Heaven at 7:27 a.m. Sunday, February 21, 2016 after a brief illness and stay at Marion Rehabilitation Center.
Chuck was born in Marion, on July 6, 1926 to the late Lester H. and Hazel (Fornshell) Burkhart. He married Opal Parnell, and she preceded him in death on January 8, 1977. Chuck and Opal were parents to Michael W. (Sheila) Burkhart of Marion; C. Steven (Debra) Burkhart of Amboy; and Pamela K. Burkhart of Amboy. His children survive.
On November 7, 1981, he married Catherine J. "Katie" Roop, and became step-father to Michael W. (Joyce) Stanton of Marion; Gloria S. Roop Osborne (Mark Cook) of Marion; Thomas M. Roop of Marion; Cathy J. (Roop) Wolfgang of Marion; and the late Karen Ann Stanton. He was grandpa to 3 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 5 step great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and was Godfather to Janessa D. Wolfgang.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lester (Kate) Burkhart, Dale (Patty) Burkhart and William Burkhart; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Harvey; and a grandson, Christopher.
Chuck retired after 43 years in the Electrical Trade. He was a member of the IBEW Local 873. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed bowling, working in the yard, playing "piggies" on Pogo, casino and bus trips, fish and tenderloin fries, and taking his golf cart around the neighborhood.
Chuck was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and had previously attended First Friends Church. He enjoyed his membership over the years as a Phi Delt and Moose Lodge member. He served as a board member on the Christmas City U.S.A. He enjoyed making wood crafts, participating in craft shows; was an avid colts fan, NASCAR fan; and was proud to root for the BOSSE High School Basketball team, where his grandson Shane Burkhart coaches.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016 in Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Pastor Mark Hummel officiating.
Friends and family will celebrate Chuck's life with a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2016 in the funeral home and again on Thursday, February 25 from noon to 1:00 p.m. prior to funeral services.
Burial will immediately follow funeral services in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
