While in the U.S. Army, he was naturalized as a U.S. Citizen in November 1943. Also while in the service, he attended Harvard University and learned to read and write the Chinese language.

In 1964 he began full-time work at Marion General Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Grant lived in Marion from that time until mid-2007. He took continuing education hours in anesthesiology but also would take a few hours of courses in hypnosis.
