Edgar R. Carpenter, age 88, passed away at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Wesleyan Health Care Center, Marion, Indiana.
Edgar was born on March 26, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of the late Robert and Geneva (Geisel) Carpenter. He married his first wife Judy Popper on September 2, 1944 and she died of cancer in May 1985. He then married Martha Loynes on July 19, 1986, and she survives.
He was a Chief Engineer at Bell Fibre Paper Products until his retirement in 1988. He was a graduate of Rose Poly Technical Institute. He was an Army veteran, serving as a 1st Lieutenant with the 81st Engineer Combat Battalion, 106th Division during WWII. He was one of the longest surviving officers of the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a life time member of the Eclid Lodge #573, F&AM Terre Haute; the Marion Elks #195; the VFW Post 7409 Marion; and the 106th Infantry Division Association. He was also a long time member of the American Legion Post 10 Marion; the Marion AERO Club; the Christmas City Square Dancers and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. He was also a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. Edgar enjoyed golfing, bowling, square dancing, working SUDUKO puzzles, and playing bridge and gin rummy.
Survivors include: wife, Martha Carpenter of Marion, Indiana; two sons, David (Susan) Carpenter of Vincennes, Indiana, and Peter (Cathy) Carpenter of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter, Deborah (Dr.Tom) Thrall of Forest Grove, Oregon; three step-sons, Brian Loynes of Lafayette, Indiana, Wayne (Angie) Loynes of Altadena, California, and Lynn (Mary Vorndran) Loynes of Rochester, Minnesota; step-daughter, Diana Loynes of Kalamazoo, Michigan; 3 granddaughters, 2 step grandsons, 2 step granddaughters, and two step great granddaughters.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jean Taylor.
Funeral Mass Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1009 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Father Dave Newton officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral mass at the church.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville, Indiana at a later date.
