Escue "Smitty" Smith

September 28, 1925 — April 1, 2014

Escue "Smitty" Smith, age 88, Marion, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

He was born in Columbia, Kentucky to the late Elbert and Sara (Click) Smith and raised by his loving foster Father and Mother, Otha & Florence Alley. He was a WWII veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Army in January 1945, and served as a general carpenter, water pump man, light truck driver and with the 50th Military Police Battalion stationed in Manila Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged April 23, 1947.

He married the love of his life Viola Dobson on December 2, 1961. She preceded him in death.

Smitty loved serving the Lord, any kind of racing, especially NASCAR, fishing, playing croquet and shuffleboard, and traveling to and eventually living in Florida with Viola. He retired from Anaconda after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Calvary Social Brethren Church, Free Masons, and Gideon's of Ft. Wayne.

He is survived by his son, Darrell (Phyllis) Alley, Marion; step-sons, Norman (Mary) Dobson, Lancaster, S. Carolina and Rex (Patti) Dobson, LaFontaine, Indiana; several step grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents, sisters, Fay Lyons and Sylvia Gear, brothers, Jim Smith and Addie Smith; his foster sisters, Helen and Hazel, his foster brother, Otha Jr., and special companion, Joan Wolfe.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating.

Burial will follow funeral services in Estates of Serenity, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Calvary Social Brethren Church, 304 N. Miller Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46952.

The family would sincerely like to thank all of the staff of Family Life Care Hospice of Marion for their wonderful care of Escue during his illness, and the compassion shown to all of his family.
