EUGENE V. "GENE" FORTNEY, age 88, died on Sunday, August 31, 2008, at his home with his loving family by his side.
Gene was born on June 22, 1920, in Detriot, Michigan, the son of Ralph and Clara "Fern" ( Morris) Fortney. On December 2, 1945, he married Mary Butterfield. She survives.
Gene was a mold maker for Overmeyer Mold in Winchester, Indiana and then at Glass Container Corp. in Gas City, retiring in 1982 after 30 years of service.
He served in the Army 34th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during WWII. Gene was very patriotic and flew the American Flag in his yard daily.
He was an inspiration to all who knew him, given his disability late in life. His positive attitude and optimistic outlook was infectious to all around him.
He was a loving and proud husband, father & grandfather.
Gene was a member of the First Church of God, American Legion Post 10, a Former member of the Optimist Club and a life member of the Flint Glass Workers Union.
Survivors include his Wife of 63 years, Mary Fortney of Marion; Sons, David Fortney of Marion, Dr. Dan Fortney of Arlington, Va, Phil Fortney (Cindy) of Marion and Bill Fortney (Judy) of Marion; Brothers, Robert Fortney (Evelyn) of Marion, Oscar Fortney of Marion, Donald Fortney (Jean) of Gas City and James Fortney (Cynthia) of Marion; a Sister, Phyllis Martin of Wills Point, Tx; 6 Grandchildren & 4 Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Shirley Albaugh & Mary Culberson and a brother, John Fortney.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at First Church of God, with Reverend Bill Fulda and Reverend Tom South officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, Indiana.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 2 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
