HELEN JOAN (FERGUSON) EDWARDS, age 85, of Marion, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Colonial Oaks Health Care & Rehab Center, Marion.
HELEN was born on March 20, 1923, in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of the late Earl A. & Grace (Prickett) Ferguson. She married Bernard P. Edwards on January 25, 1948. He preceded her in death on October 15, 1999.
She attended Marion Public Schools; Lincoln Elementary, Martin Boots and graduated from Marion High School in 1940. She attended Ball State Teacher's College in 1941 and graduated from the Ball Memorial Training School for Nurses in 1944. She received her post-graduate degree from the Women's Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 1947 and was assistant head nurse. She was first employed at Marion General Hospital in 1944 as staff nurse and was the OB Supervisor from 1947 to 1948. In 1945, she worked three months at the Oak Ridge Hospital in Oak Ridge, Tennessee as staff nurse in the nursery department. She also worked at the Veteran's Hospital in Marion from 1942 to 1943 and in 1949. In 1953, she worked for Dr. Caroll Warren and in 1970 for Dr. Max Ganz. She retired in 1988 from Marion General Hospital and continued to work until 1994.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion and attended the 8th. Street Wesleyan Church and was a member of the Red Hats Society. She was a past member of the R.N. Club; the Grant County Nurses Society; was past president of the John L. McCullough Chapter of DeMolay Mothers Club and the Lincoln School Study's Club. She enjoyed her family, traveling, reading, crocheting and quilting.
Survivors include Sons, Terry (Cindy) of Marion, Indiana; Gale (Kathy) of Brookston, Indiana and Craig (Jane) of Gas City, Indiana; Daughter, Peggy Ellen (Christopher) of Marion, Indiana; Step-son, Rick Ambrose (Peggy) of Medical Lake, Washington; 14 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph A. Ferguson in 1979 and a son, Phil E. Edwards on January 19, 2008.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Reverend Doug Davies officiating.
Burial will be in Estates of Serenity, Marion, Indiana.
Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
