Irma Rosa (Figueroa) Cannon, went home to be with the Lord, Monday evening at Marion General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Irma was born on December 11, 1930, in Yaucco, Puerto Rico, the daughter of the late Francisco and Ernestina Figueroa.
Irma loved life. She eagerly embraced each day playing music loud, dancing, and keeping her home immaculate. Irma was filled with words of wisdom from her Spanish heritage that she lovingly shared with her family.
As a child, Irma loved to perform by singing, dancing, reciting poetry, and acting out parts of a play for her neighbors and relatives. Growing up, Irma always wanted to become a teacher. After graduating high school valedictorian, she came to the United States on July 4, 1948, to further her education. That date henceforth became her favorite holiday. Irma was employed in the garment district in Manhattan, New York. Here she met the love of her life, Norman Chester Cannon. Subsequently the couple married and had 7 children.
In the latter part of the 1960's, after all her children were born, Irma continued her zest for learning. She earned her Associate's Degree in business education. Soon after, she earned certification as a nursing assistant and was proudly employed by Marion General Hospital. Irma was very serious about her Catholic faith. In the 1970's, she strived to collect sponsorships to build the new St. Paul Catholic Church on Kem Road. Irma proudly smiled as she would read her name among the donors listed on the golden plaques displayed at the church entrance. Irma was a member of the Altar Rosary Society #4.
She was very patriotic. With honor, she flew the American flag every day in her yard at home. She felt humbled in becoming a Community Residence Sponsor for the Veterans Administration. For 48 years, Irma opened her home to many war veterans in an attempt to rehabilitate, and return these gentlemen to their families.
Of all the many things Irma accomplished and loved the most, nothing was as precious as her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her strength and determination to enjoy God's gift of life will continue to be embraced by each family member for generations to come. Irma, a "Mother" and a "Mama", will be sadly missed.
