Jack S. Kightlinger passed away Tuesday morning, following an extended illness. He was born in Marion, the son of Celeste and Erle Kightlinger.
Mr. Kightlinger played football for Marion High School, and also was president of its Class of 1942. After graduation he attended Indiana University for a short time, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served until the end of the war, mainly in the Pacific Theater on the Island of Peleliu. There, he served as a Navy Corpsman, (connected to the Marines) and gave medical assistance to the war wounded, including some of the survivors of the USS Indianapolis.
Following his discharge, Mr. Kightlinger returned to Marion. While repairing a car in front of his parents' Fourth Street home, he met the love of his life. Helen Kightlinger (then Helen Burton) was on her way to a soda fountain in LaFontaine with friends, when they stopped to greet Mr. Kightlinger. The Kightlingers were married on July 14, 1948.
As he began married life, he also began a career in business. Mr. Kightlinger became a trust officer and senior vice president of the Marion National Bank and worked for 34 years in the Fourth Street building that now houses Regions Bank.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Helen; daughter, Cathy; son, Drew; daughter-in-law, Janet; granddaughters, Laura Kightlinger & Erin Jones; grandson-in-law, Philip Jones; niece, Jeannie Smith and nephew-in-law, Frank Smith.
Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 19 in St. Paul Catholic Church, 1009 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Father Richard Weisenberger officiating. Lunch will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the Kightlingers ask that donations be sent to the Marion Va Medical Center, whose staff diligently cared for Mr. Kightlinger as if he were a relative. Checks may be made payable to VANIHCS, and sent to 1700 East 38th. Street, c/o 135; Marion, Indiana 46953. At the bottom of the check, please write, "In memory of Jack S. Kightlinger."
