James W. Bowman, age 85, of Marion, made his transition on Thursday, April 12, 2012, in his home.
James was born on August 11, 1926, in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late I.J. Bowman and Nelle Bowman. He was a graduate of Marion High School and attended Purdue University and Indiana University. In 1954, he married Belva Behlow Rader, and they shared 58 years together in June. They were also summer residents of Lake Webster.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. James was President and former owner of Bowman Construction Company, Inc., and former Director of Fidelity Federal Savings Bank serving on the board for 28 years. He attended Temple Congregational United Church of Christ in Marion.
He was a member of the Samaritan Lodge #105; Mizmur Shrine Club of Grant County; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Ft. Wayne; Mizpah Temple, Ft. Wayne; Deer Creek Conservation Club; Marion-Grant County Humane Society; A.A.R.P.; Van Buren American Legion; and the Tippecanoe Country Club. James was an avid water and snow skier, skiing well into his 70's. He had been sailing since he was 11 years old, had his pilot's license at age 16, and he and his father, I.J. Bowman owned an airplane together.
Survivors include: wife, Belva Bowman of Marion, Indiana; son, Bruce (Mindy) Bowman of Carmel, Indiana; daughter, Diane (David) Poole of Marion, Indiana; four grandchildren, Darcy (Sean) Grindle, Beverly Poole, Samantha Bowman and Blake Bowman; and niece, Laura Jones of Okeechobee, Florida.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Bowman Slater.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 16, 2012, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with the Pastor Marv Wiseman officiating.
Burial will be in Estates of Serenity, Marion, Indiana.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. Masonic Services will be held at 5:00 p.m.
