John M. Cook

Captain John M. "Poppy John" Cook, age 54, of Marion, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2009, at home.

John was born on March 10, 1955, in Marion, Indiana, the son of Ted and Ruth (Morris) Cook. He married Susan Corn on June 18, 1980. She survives.

He was a graduate of Mississinewa High School and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. He also completed numerous job related classes and training in Emergency Medical Technician and Police work. He was a US Navy veteran.

From 1974 to 1978, he was a machine/extrusion operator at Tulox Plastics; an EMT for Marion General Hospital from 1978 to 1981 and from 1979 to 1981 a police officer for the City of Warren Police Department. He then held the position of Patrol Officer, Narcotics Officer, Detective and Shift Sergeant for the City of Marion Police Department from 1981 to 1990 and in 1990, he went to work for the Grant County Sheriff's Department as Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain.

He loved to ride Harleys and was the best Father and Grandfather. He dearly loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include: wife, Susan Cook of Marion, Indiana; his parents, Ted & Ruth Cook of Marion, Indiana; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Gene & Phyllis Corn of Amboy, Indiana; son, Jason Cook (Christine) of Garrett, Indiana; daughter, Amy (Lake) Rendel (Jonathan) of Noblesville, Indiana; brothers, Tom Cook of Twelve Mile, Indiana and Jeff Cook (Sherry) of Marion, Indiana; sisters, Joyce Oyler (Mike) of Marion, Indiana and Joan Williams (Mike) of Gas City, Indiana; and grandchildren, Gage Ruch, Hayden Lake-Hayes, Ellie Cook, Liam Rendel, Leah Cook and Sophia Rendel.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Madelyn Lake and sister, Sharon Bradshaw.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Grace Community Church, 1810 E. Bradford Street, Marion, with Reverend Darrell Smith, Senior Chaplain officiating.

Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 14 at Grace Community Church.
