Jr. Charles Phillip Gabbert

Charles "Phillip" Gabbert, Jr., age 91, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in his Marion home.

Phillip was born September 15, 1920, in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late Charles Phillip Gabbert, Sr. and Bernice (Bowman) Gabbert. He married Ernestine Terhune on August 3, 1946, and she preceded him in death on July 22, 1999.

Phillip was a Marion High School graduate. He served in the Navy during WWII, where he was a communication specialist on a transport ship during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was also the owner of Erma's Restaurant and Gabbert's Jewelry Store, and had worked at Bell Fibre Corp.

Phillip was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Marion where he also served as a Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion, and the Kiwanis Club. He loved golf and played well in to his 90's at Arbor Trace Golf Club where he enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include: son, Dr. Joseph Phillip Gabbert; grandson, Justin Phillip Gabbert, both of San Diego, California; and sisters-in-law, Bernice and Lois Terhune, both of Marion, Indiana.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Martha Bergman.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Pastor Jeanie Barnes officiating.

Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana, followed by a reception for all friends and family at Arbor Trace Golf Club.

Friends may call from noon until services at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in the funeral home.
