Leonard E. "Gene" Vinson, age 79, died on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at his residence in Marion.
Gene was born on September 19, 1928, in Marion, the son of the late Garth Vinson and Mary L. (Townsend) Vinson. On June 21, 2003, he married Mary Green, who survives.
Gene was in the lumber business for most of his life. He was the former owner of Vinson & Son Contractors in Elwood. He opened and managed the Wicks Lumber Company in Marion; he formerly owned Coast to Coast Hardware in Marion and retired from Home Depot in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1990.
Gene was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the 11th Airborne Division.
He was a life member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368 , Marion Moose Lodge #253, Van Buren American Legion, and attended Grace Community Church. He was an avid woodworker. His Wife, Children and Grandchildren were the light of his life.
Survivors include Wife, Mary Vinson of Marion; Son, David (Sharon) Vinson of Indianapolis; Son, Larry Vinson of Elwood; Son, Mark (Ada) Vinson of Lawrenceburg; Daughter, Cynthia (Dan) Meyer of Elwood; Brother, Kenneth (Lenora) Vinson of Elwood; Brother Lewis (Sandra) Vinson of Arizona; Step-Son, Mark (Virginia) Green of Interlocken, Michigan; Step-Son, Timothy (Barbara) Green of Amboy; Step-Son, Gary (Julie) Green of Converse; Step-Son, Tony (Rosie) Green of Swayzee; Step-Daughter, Kimberly Willhide of Marion; 28 Grandchildren & 25 Great-Grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Reverend Dr. Tom Mansbarger officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Sweetser, Indiana.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m.
