Mabel Irene Turner Sprong Stevens, age 91, of Marion, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Rolling Meadows Health and Rehabilitation Center, LaFontaine, Indiana.
Mabel was born February 9, 1926 in Marion, Indiana the daughter of the late Fred and Alma (Horton) Turner of Converse, Indiana. She attended grade school and high school in Converse. In high school, she became active in sports, playing softball and basketball for the Bordermen.
In later years she was chosen pitcher for the Farnsworth softball team and at the time was employed there. In 1945 she married Carlus Sprong, son of Clinton and Surrena Sprong. They became parents of two daughters and one son. In 1955 Carlus was struck by lightening. In 1963 she married Monroe Stevens a Marion fireman, and together they raised two children, Ron and Paula. Mabel has occupied most of her life in helping others. She opened her home to and welcomed veterans as she supervised to their needs, and she became “Mom” to them. In addition to this she found time to contribute to the hospitalized veterans and the wounded warrior veterans, the State Police and always made sure that she sent money to Feed the Children. Mabel was an avid baker and owned and operated a cake decorating business from her home.
She is survived by three daughters, Carol Moorehead, Darlene Behr and Paula (Terry) Parson; son, Randy Sprong and former daughter-in-law, Shauna; grandchildren, Shannon Moorehead, Branden Behr, Tyler Parson, Travis Sprong (Rachel), Autumn Sprong, Heather Frich, and Ashley (Steve) Clark; several great-grandchildren; and her special dog, “Bo”.
Mabel was preceded in death by her mother, Alma; her father, Fred Turner; three brothers, George (Elnora), Merrill (Mittie Mae) and Lewis; son, Ronald Stevens, and grandson, Chad Behr.
Friends and family may call from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana; and from noon to 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2017 in the funeral home prior to the funeral services.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2017 in the funeral home with Reverend Tom Mansbarger officiating.
Burial will follow in Knox Chapel Cemetery, Point Isabel, Indiana.
