MARY A. PALMER, age 88, of Marion, died on Monday, February 9, 2009, at Marion General Hospital, Marion.
She was born on March 16, 1920, in Springfield, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Hop T. and America Rosie Mae (Pippin) Grogan. She married George Palmer on January 12, 1944. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1998 after 54 years of marriage.
She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She was second in the state of Illinois for free-throw shooting percentage during her sophmore year at Christopher High School. She was a member of the Senior Coalition, a Sunday school teacher, a Brownie & Girl Scout leader, a Boy Scout Den Mother and Mother of two Eagle Scouts. She was owner and caregiver of Jack & Jill's Day Care and taught preschool at Baptist Temple School. She had also worked at Marion General Hospital until the ill health of her spouse forced her to retire. She was past president of the Women's Club in Illinois. She was a seamstress, cook, heart mender, charitable giver and prayer warrior; always expressing God's love to others and occasionally was a counselor to all who had problems or just heavy hearts. As a witness of her salvation, she was able to quietly and tenderly bring God's love into other peoples lives.
Survivors include Daughters, Marsha Lynn Crabtree of Wabash, Indiana, Jeanie (Bruce) Williamson of Upland, Indiana and Ms. Melanie Arven of Marion, Indiana; Brother, Lester (Donna) Grogan of Valier, Illinois; Sisters, Molly Atchison of Sesser, Illinois and Margie Maceri of Christopher, Illinois; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren & 4 great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca & Elizabeth; two sons, Marine Lance Corporal Christopher K. Palmer & Johnie Palmer; three brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Reverend Tom Mansbarger officiating.
Burial will be in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, Indiana.
