Mary Jane (Masterson) Simmons, age 90, of Marion, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the Sterling House in Marion.
She was born to Elwood Carl and Halcie (Stilwell) Masterson on March 19, 1924, in Marion, Indiana. She married Robert Gaynelle Lee Simmons on November 14, 1942.
Jane enjoyed gardening, canning and freezing, reading, travel, cooking and baking, especially her Christmas cookies and candies. Gaynelle and Jane were charter members of the Crusader Class and Jane was active in the Ruth Circle of the First Christian Church, Marion. She also was active as a room mother, Cub Scout Den Mother and 4-H Judge. She played clarinet in the Marion High School band and in the Easter Pageant for many years. Jane worked in Central Supply and as a recovery room attendant at Marion General Hospital for many years.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gaynelle in 2005. They are survived by their children, Stephen Kittrick (Cinda) of Traverse City, Michigan; Beth Ann (John) Guido, Mary Lynn Nordstrom, both of Marion, and Rebecca Ellen Simmons, of Gas City; sisters, Elizabeth Shrock of Marion, Carolyn (James) Harvey of Eureka, California; sisters-in-law, Letty Kay Masterson, Mary Jane (Glenn) Futrell, Nancy Simmons, all of Marion, and Beverly Sue Clark of Fairland; brother-in-law, Bill Simmons of Marion; grandchildren, Gregory (Robyn) Guido, Laura (Gary Fordyce) Guido, Kris Nordstrom, all of Marion, Kevin Nordstrom of Louisville, Kentucky, Sarah (Aaron) Estelle of Holland, Michigan and Aaron (Jana) Simmons of Hudsonville, Michigan; great-grandchildren, Marya Guido, Angela, Amanda and Alaina Simmons; great-great grandchildren, Dalton and Serenity Johnson; special family friends, Patty Byrd and Lisa Poole; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death her parents, brother, Carl Thomas Masterson, brother, James Edwin Masterson in infancy, brother-in-law, Paul Shrock, and granddaughter, Hilary Simmons.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014, at First Christian Church, 1970 Wabash Road, Marion, Indiana with Pastor David Mills officiating.
Burial will be in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, Indiana.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana; and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, in the church prior to funeral services.
