Richard Thomas Cochrane, age 69, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Richard was born on May 21, 1943, in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late Thomas A. and Hazel D. (Williams) Cochrane. He married Barbara Ann Gallmeyer on September 30, 1977 in Indianapolis, and she survives.
Richard graduated from Marion High School in 1962 and worked for RCA for three years. He joined the U.S. Navy, served in the Vietnam Conflict and attended Queen Elizabeth's silver jubilee. He was stationed at various fleet, naval aviation and CB units.
Richard earned a B.A. in criminal justice from Indiana University, M.A. in human resources management from Pepperdine, M.A. in public administration from Golden Gate.
He retired as a senior chief with 11 military medals. Richard retired as a deputy sheriff in Virginia. He also served as a U.S. Marshal on special assignment. He volunteered enthusiastically with humane societies, Animal Care and Control and dog rescue groups.
Richard was a devoted Christian, a member of Norfolk Rock Church, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War Camp 12, and American Legion Post 470. He enjoyed genealogy, non-fiction reading, and earlier flying single-engine planes, parachuting, boating and camping.
Survivors include: wife, Barbara Cochrane of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; son, Rick (Jennifer) Cochrane of Crewe, Virginia; brothers, Robert (Raelene) Cochrane of Nashville, Indiana and Russell (Ruth) Cochrane of Westerville, Ohio; and grandson, Jamie Cochrane.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Pastor Verlin Haarer officiating.
Burial will be in Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
