Richard Arlen (Dick) Greiner, age 89 of Marion passed away quietly in his home and went on to his eternal home with Jesus on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
Dick was born on October 14, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio the son of the late Herman and Anna (Zitzelsberger) Greiner. He married Judith Ann Wilcox on June 2, 1953, and his beloved wife preceded him in death on February 6, 2010.
After nine years in the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, he went on to serve as a Marion Police Officer for 21 years. For several years he served as Captain of Detectives and solved several high profile crimes. Following retirement from the police department, Richard continued to serve others, working in technical maintenance at Marion General Hospital and as maintenance supervisor at Marion Community Schools.
Richard enjoyed serving on the Grant County Sheriff’s Department Merit Board encouraging young people in careers in law enforcement. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids in soccer, dance and theater. Richard enjoyed coaching at both the middle school and high school levels, and for many years, he was an assistant baseball and basketball coach at Marion College. He enjoyed playing semi-pro football in his early 20’s, as well as softball and golf in later years.
He was a member of Christland United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 10, the Marine Corp League, a past president of the Merit Board for the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, and a past president of the PAL Club Board.
Dick is survived by a son, Ron Greiner (Marsha) of Indianapolis; a daughter, Amy Florea of Marion; three granddaughters, Jenni Gullion (Chris), Amanda Keller (Dustin), and Allison Florea; a grandson, Brian Hullinger; and four great-grandchildren, Arlen and Daphne Keller and Mackenzie and Madison Gullion.
Friends and family may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2020 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Christland United Methodist Church, 721 E. Charles St., Marion, Indiana, with calling one hour prior to services.
Burial will immediately follow the funeral service in Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
