Robert M."Bob" George, age 88, has gone hoping to join his wife, Virginia, to be with the Lord. He left this earth at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009.
Virginia preceded him in death on November 20, 2005. Also preceding him in death was their son, Geoffrey who died December 8, 2005.
He was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on September 10, 1921 moving to Marion at the age of one year. He remained a resident of Marion all his life with the exception of a year living in Washington, D.C. working for the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey in the Dept. of Commerce building and nearly three years in the Army during WWII
He entered the Army as a draftee on January 15, 1943 and was honorably discharged December 14, 1945. He distinguished himself as a topographic draftsman in the 864th Aviation Engineers when he drew the first map ever drawn of an island in the South West Pacific.
In civilian life, he worked as an engineering draftsman and supervisor in steel fabrication and then as plant manager in the Wabash, Indiana plant of Stone Industrial Division of the J.L. Clark Manufacturing Company, retiring in 1986.
As a retiree, Bob and Virginia traveled the United States and Europe enjoying life together and with their children, Geoffrey and Rebecca. Bob and Virginia enjoyed square dancing, card games, and golf with their many friends. Both Bob and Virginia also enjoyed working as inspectors at the voting polls for many years.
They both enjoyed meeting with Bob's former Army comrades attending over 20 annual reunions from coast to coast. Bob was a planner for the group, arranging accommodations and activities and worked diligently to keep former Army unit members in touch with one another. He also wrote a history of Aviation Engineers which he published. It was entitled, "Aviation Engineers Avenging Pearl Harbor." For his efforts, he was granted membership in the organization known as the Military Writers Society of America. He was a member of the Samaritan Masonic Lodge #105 F&AM; The Van Buren American Legion; and a member of the First Christian Church of Marion since early childhood.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Haag of Indianapolis, Indiana; three granddaughters, Courtney Haag & Meredith Haag, both of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Lindsay George of Benton, Arkansas.
Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Rodger Moore officiating.
Burial with full military rites will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.
