Ruth Emmaline Boller Grant

November 10, 1919 — January 31, 2011

Ruth Emmaline Boller Grant passed away on Monday, January 31, in Warsaw, IN, at the age of 91. Ruth was the second of three daughters born to James Lee Boller and Alma Thornburg Boller. She was born on November 10, 1919, at the family farm in Van Buren, IN. Throughout her life, Ruth enjoyed reminiscing about growing up on the farm as she told of the simplicity and joy of that life, and the strong family bonds that were forged there.

Following her graduation from Taylor University in Upland, IN, she worked for both the Grant County Department of Welfare and the Marion County Department of Welfare. While at Taylor University, Ruth met Merlyn Arthur Grant. They were married for sixty-four years; March of 1944 until his passing in August of 2008. During the early years of their marriage, Ruth and Merlyn spent time living in Indianapolis, Chicago, Boston, and South Bend where Ruth was also employed as a social worker.

Following the completion of her husband's medical training, the Grant's resided in Fairmount and then in Marion, IN, where they raised their family and lived until 2007. Ruth then moved to Warsaw, IN, and lived with her daughter and son-in-law after her husband was placed in a nursing home there.

Ruth was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Marion for over fifty years where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a 'soldier' in the Salvation Army for many years, and she was an active member of the Marion General Hospital Women's Auxiliary. In Warsaw, Ruth attended the First Baptist Church with her daughter and son-in-law where she enjoyed the spiritual messages, and the fellowship of its members.

Ruth was an avid reader and could converse on a seemingly endless array of subjects. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, and travel. Ruth and her husband had the opportunity to visit Europe, Asia, and many other destinations throughout the United States and Canada with their family. During their years in Marion, the Grants lived in Wildwood where Ruth particularly enjoyed the peace and serenity of the woods, the ponds, and all of the wildlife the property had to offer.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merlyn, and her sisters Helen and Edith.

She is survived by her loving children, Martha (Henry) Hart of Warsaw, IN; and Douglas (Barbara) Grant of Sacramento, CA; one sister-in-law Margaret Grant; four step-granddaughters, eight step-great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2011, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Pastors Henry Hart, Charles Hall and Steve Peters officiating.

Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday, February 3 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
