Sheila J. Rix, age 64, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012, at Marion general Hospital, Marion, Indiana. She had been ill the past 20 years but remained as active as possible.
Sheila was born February 19, 1948, in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of the late Phillip J Satterthwaite and Madonna Fowler, who survives.
She was a graduate of Marion High School and joined the United States Army serving 4 years as a dental assistant. Sheila received an honorable discharge on August 20, 1976 while stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. She was awarded the National Defense Service Medal/Good Conduct Medal. She remained an advocate for women veterans after she was discharged. She was a lifelong member of Gethsemane Episcopal Church and sang in the choir during her teens. She also enjoyed family and friends and a number of special canine friends throughout her life.
Sheila received a transplant in 1998 and subsequently organized two fund raising events for the American Liver Foundation for Indiana and transplant physicians from IU Medical Hospital were guest speakers at the event. Generous support was also provided by Rosie's Little Italy and Gethsemane Episcopal Church.
Survivors include: mother, Madonna Fowler of Marion, Indiana; brother, Terry N Satterthwaite of Beaumont, Texas; two nieces, Lisa Satterthwaite and Sydney Campagna both of Florida; two nephews, Ian Satterthwaite and Tom Curtis both of Florida; five great-nieces, Nicole, Shayna, and Kiana Satterthwaite, Lily and May Compagna; and two great-nephews, Jeramy and Jeramiah Wall.
She was also preceded in death by her father, Phillip J. Satterthwaite, Sister Pamela Messersmith, and loving Grandparents.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Gethsemane Episcopal Church 111 E. 9th Street, Marion, Indiana.
Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
