Shela Lynn Howard, age 71, of Marion, transitioned Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 6:55 a.m., residing at the University Nursing Care & Rehab in Upland, Indiana.
Shela was born to James and Mayetta M. Howard on May 26, 1944 and was raised in Marion. She was the third of four girls during this union. She attended school until the eighth grade and then she worked various jobs.
Our Mother loved the Lord. He was with her from early rise to late sunset. She always said, "The Lord will provide." And he did! She was a member of Allen Temple AME Church and loved to cook and crochet.
She returned to school and got her GED. Shela developed a passion for cooking. There was great pride in the preparation and presentation of different foods and fruits. She had developed a portfolio from her banquets. She truly loved to see the smiles on their faces as they ate. It was satisfaction at its best!
She is survived by a daughter, Mayetta J. (Barry) Cosby of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sons, Rico (Miledy) Cox of Marion, Indiana and Gerald (Cathy) Dixon of Rochester, Indiana; sisters, Marlow Reeves of Marion, Indiana, Karen Armstrong of Fort Worth, Texas, Rida Bronaugh-Jones of Palmdale, Florida, Yvonne Cooper of Los Angeles, California, Carla Hines of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Atoya Ricks of Marion, Indiana and Fredricka Oliphant of Macon, Georgia; 15 grandchildren and 19 plus great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by family, friends and loved ones.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Phillip Stewart; and daughter, Nancy Scott.
Friends may call from noon to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor David Birchett officiating.
Burial will follow funeral services in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
