Shirley Overman

March 13, 1929 — July 11, 2012

Shirley Overman, 83, of Marion passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Miller's Merry Manor following a long illness. Shirley was born in Marion where she spent the majority of her life following graduation from Marion High School. She lived in New Jersey and New York after her marriage to Donald C. Overman, then an agent for the FBI. After she returned to Marion, she raised 3 children and became one for the first licensed female real estate brokers in Grant County. She retired in 2004.

In her earlier career she was a radio personality when she met Don Overman, also doing radio shows, and later both did a number of television commercials and print ads for a variety of companies. Later, as a million-dollar sales real estate agent, she held office and worked with a number of organizations including, past president of the Marion Area Board of Realtors and the Grant County Literacy Council, past-trustee of the First United Methodist Church, and Board of Directors Member of the Hostess House. Her community service included the Grant County Humane Society, Women's Council of Real Estate, Advance Club, Chapter KG of the PEO, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. For a time, she also wrote a cooking column for a small local paper. In her spare time, she was a skilled bridge player and loved to socialize with her many friends. She was a tireless advocate for her community and tried to do her part to improve Marion.

Shirley was a descendant of the Wallace family of Marion, tracing her roots back to the early settlers of the Marion area. Her great-grandfather, John M Wallace, was a Grant County Circuit Court Judge and her grandfather ran the Marion Democrat. A cousin, Lew Wallace, was the author of the novel Ben Hur.

She is survived by her sons, Patrick Overman, Giddings, TX and Scott Overman (fiancé Wanda Williams), Marion. She is also survived by her brother, John Wallace of Estes Park, CO; her cousin, Sydney (Chuck) Kelly, Nashville, IN, and their children; and her beloved dog Willy.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Donald C Overman, her daughter, Leslie Ann in 1981, and her parents, Saxe and Esther Reagan Wallace.
