Sylvia L. Lyons-Gear

SYLVIA L. LYONS-GEAR, age 85, died at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Rolling Meadows Health Care Facility, LaFontaine.

She was born on February 20, 1923, in Sandy Hook, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Albert and Sarah (Thornsberry) Smith. She married Carl E. Lyons on December 23, 1940. Carl preceded her in death on March 20, 1981. She then married William R. Gear, Jr. on September 17, 1984. Bill preceded her in death on September 19, 2005.

She dedicated her life as a homemaker rasing four children. Son, Wendell, required special needs and finally lost his battle with Cystic Fibrosis at 40 years old in 1988. One of her greatest accomplishments as a young adult was locating all her siblings as they had been separated at a very young age. She was also a 50 year survivor of breast cancer.

Survivors include Daughters, Marcie Beckman (Don) of LaFontaine, Indiana and Donna Ritter (Harry) of Marion, Indiana; Son, Tom Lyons (Amanda); Sisters, Eula DeHart of Morehead, Kentucky and Joan McDonald (David) of Gladstone, Missouri; Brother, Escue "Sonny" Smith of Marion, Indiana; Step-Daughter, Janice Oliver of Marion, Indiana; and Grandsons, Timothy Amburgey, Jake Ritter & Jordan T. Denny.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Wendell L. Lyons and siblings, Addie Smith, Jim Smith, Faye Lyons, Roger Thornsberry & Beulah Whitt.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with Pastor David Trimble officiating.

Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m. Monday, November 10 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
