Virginia B. Rhamy

Virginia Beatrice Wright Rhamy, age 98, passed away at 3:45 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Peabody Memorial Home, N. Manchester, Indiana.

The youngest of 13 brothers and sisters, Mrs. Rhamy was born January 18, 1911 in Anderson, South Carolina. She grew up in Anderson and graduated from Anderson College in 1931. She pursued a Nursing degree at Georgia Baptist College in Atlanta, Georgia.

It was there that she met and married Dr. Arthur Rhamy, assistant professor of anatomy at Emory University. In 1935, they returned to Wabash, Indiana to care for his younger children, Evadeane, Richard and Donald, and to share a medical office with his brother, Dr. Lester Rhamy.

Mrs. Rhamy spent those early years of marriage building a family and working with Dr. Rhamy to build a medical practice. She was a member of the Wabash Presbyterian Church, participated in garden and bridge clubs, and developed long-lasting friendships with community members.

When Dr. Rhamy entered the Navy in 1942 during WWII, and was stationed at Whindbey Island, Washington. Mrs. Rhamy followed with sons Richard and Don; Evadeane was now in medical school. In 1953, when Dr. Rhamy served his urology residency at Western Reserve University in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Rhamy again followed with youngest daughter Janet; Richard and Don were now in medical school. In 1955, the entire family moved to Marion where a urology practice was begun. Mrs. Rhamy was a member of the Marion Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Hostess House. She was also a member of the PEO Sorority; the Advance Club and several bridge clubs. Once again, Mrs. Rhamy developed new and long-lasting friendships with community members.

After his retirement in 1968, the Rhamys moved to LaFontaine to enjoy country life. For 15 years, they enjoyed the land, their home and new opportunities. In 1983, they moved back to Marion. Mrs. Rhamy stayed in her Marion home until 2006, long after Dr. Rhamy died in 1994. For the past three years, Mrs. Rhamy has lived at the Peabody Memorial Home in North Manchester.

Survivors include children, Mary E. McLelland, M.D. of Bloomington, Indiana, Donald E. Rhamy, M.D. of Marion, Indiana, and Janet Rhamy Broyles of Phoenix, Arizona, and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 18 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana with Reverend Sue Babovec officiating.

A private committal will follow at the Falls Cemetery, Wabash, Indiana.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday at the funeral home, prior to the funeral service.
