Willard R. Chambers, age 97, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Miller's Merry Manor, Marion.
Willard was born on November 2, 1915, in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late James and Inez (Certain) Chambers. He married Barbara Moore on September 20, 1940, and she preceded him in death on December 9, 1997.
Willard was Recreation Director and Park Superintendent for the City of Marion for 46 years, and was the City's First Recreation Director. He was a member of the Indiana Softball Hall of Fame and was inducted in to the Grant County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. He was President of the Indiana Softball Association for many years and officiated basketball, football and track. Chambers Park South was named after Willard, and he was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Marion. He also played professional basketball.
Survivors include: two sons, Joe (Margo) Chambers of Marion, Indiana, and Jim (Shirley) Chambers of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren, Tiffany Chambers of Zionsville, Indiana, Lydia (Bob) Schultz of Chelsea, Michigan; Matthew Chambers of Noblesville, Indiana, Andrea (James) Fowler of Charleston, S. Carolina, and Doug Chambers of Auburndale, Florida.
He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013, at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, with the Reverend Mark Helm officiating.
Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
