William Andrew Mooney

July 14, 1933 — March 21, 2008

WILLIAM ANDREW MOONEY, age 74, of Marion, lost his long and courageous battle with cancer at 2:20 p.m. on March 21, 2008 at the Hospice Unit of the Marion VA Medical Center. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and we rejoice that he is now safe at home with the Lord.

He was born in Peru, Indiana to the late George A. and Alice (Slusher) Mooney and had been a resident of Marion since 1955. He graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1951 where he excelled in basketball. He married Shirley Westcott on February 26, 1955. She survives.

Bill retired from GenCorp after 30 years and was a tool and diemaker. After retirement, he worked part-time as a cook at the Juvenile Detention Center for several years. Bill was a great cook and loved cooking for his family. He enjoyed watching the cooking shows on TV and was always trying something new. Bill was also an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He liked to watch all types of sports on TV.

Bill was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #10 and the VFW Post 6728. He was a fomer member of the Eagles and the Amvets.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Shirley Mooney, Marion; sons, William T. (Diane) Mooney, Clever, Missouri; Patrick (Charlene) Mooney, Chickasaw, Alabama; Michael (Lisa) Mooney, Henagar, Alabama and David (Emily) Mooney, Marion; daughters, Teresa (Rick) Cummins, Auburn; Lisa (Chris) Alter, Northwood, North Dakota and Karen Mooney, Rocky Mount, Virginia; brothers, James (Marilyn) Lovelace, Dunnellon, Florida and Ed (Shirley) Lovelace, Indiana, Pennsylvania; 26 grandchildren & 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.

Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at St Paul Catholic Church, with Reverend David Newton officiating.

Burial will be in Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 25 at the Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana, with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m.
